IRS Processing Delays Causes Confusion

The IRS sent CP59 notices to nearly 260,000 taxpayers, advising they have not submitted their 2019 tax returns even though there are millions of returns that have yet to be processed.

These erroneous notices are causing a lot of confusion for individuals who have, in fact, submitted their 2019 returns.  Recently, the IRS issued a statement acknowledging it should not have sent the notices.  Specifically, it advises “People who filed their 2019 return but nevertheless received the CP59 notice, can disregard the letter and do not need to take any action.”

Beware of the Latest Tax Scams

Every year, thieves develop new schemes to try to steal your personal information and/or your money.  This year is no different!

Be on the lookout for some of these fraudulent activities:

  • Calls from phony IRS agents designed to scare you.
  • Phishing emails containing malware to gain control of your computer.
  • False charities soliciting donations to steal your money.
  • Imposter tax preparers posing as legitimate professionals.

For more detailed information on these illegal activities, check out the IRS’s annual “Dirty Dozen” list of tax scams.

Remember, if the IRS has a question about a taxpayer’s return, it will generally make first contact by letter.  It will never initiate communication via email, social media or text.
