Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin announced on twitter early Friday, March 20th, the deadline for filing federal returns is extended to July 15, 2020.

Specifically, his tweet read: “At @realDonaldTrump’s direction, we are moving Tax Day from April 15 to July 15. All taxpayers and businesses will have this additional time to file and make payments without interest or penalties.”

This is one of the administration’s latest relief efforts to help the nation cope with the fallout from the Coronavirus. Earlier this week, Mnuchin announced that individual taxpayers and corporations may delay paying taxes owed to the federal government up to 90 days. However, he did not indicate whether the filing deadline would be delayed.

With his latest announcement, we now know individuals, corporations and trusts have until July 15th to file their federal returns and pay any taxes owed.  Some states, such as California and Connecticut, have also postponed their filing deadlines (dates vary by state), but it is unclear whether the rest will follow suit.

As soon as we receive further guidance from the IRS and the state tax authorities, we will keep you informed.
